Goals

Jobs

  • David Gereighty will focus on economic development and new jobs for our state.

  • David Gereighty will support a reduction of business taxes to companies that bring workforce growth to Louisiana.

  • David Gereighty believes in making government work and will support promising innovations. We need to reform the way we do business in Louisiana.

  • David Gereighty believes that companies that do business with Louisiana should have a presence in Louisiana.

It is my hope that you will join my campaign so that together we can build a better Louisiana

Insurance Reform

  • David Gereighty will fight to lower insurance rates, bring real competition to insurance rates in Louisiana and reform the Citizens Property Insurance Corp to compete on the open insurance market.

  • Reasonable insurance rates should be available to all Louisianians.

As your state senator David Gereighty will make insurance providers responsible to the people of Louisiana

Healthcare

A CBS/New York Times poll in February 2007, for instance, showed 70 percent of Americans considered the lack of health insurance a “very serious” problem.

  • The New Orleans Medical District needs to be rebuilt with an emphasis on education, research and emergency medicine.

  • As your state senator David Gereighty will address the health insurance crisis (25% of citizens of LA have no health insurance) we face in Louisiana through a public / private partnership.

  • The Charity system’s quality of care must be such that everyone in Louisiana will want to use regardless of income and must be neighborhood clinic based not hospital based.

  • The Charity system needs to be removed from the LSU system and setup as an independent operation within state government operated on a non-profit basis

As your state senator David Gereighty will work to improve health services. Do you want to continue to rank 49th in the country in healthcare, practically the most unhealthy state in the United States?

Education

  • David Gereighty will support legislation designed to improve and strengthen public education at the primary, secondary and post-secondary levels in Louisiana.

  • Pre-K education is vital in providing our children with a solid foundation for their primary school education.

  • Strong public schools that provide quality education for all students will provide incentive for economic growth.

  • Universities across Louisiana need to be strengthened. I would remove the “flagship” status of LSU and require all state universities to compete on their merits for funding beyond normal operations. Competition between universities will lead to higher quality universities.

Education needs to be the top priority for all. Schools provide the workforce that will support the economic development of the region. The time is now, change is necessary and mediocrity cannot be tolerated. Our goal must be the best schools in America.

Coastal Restoration

  • South Louisiana is in grave danger of surrendering to the Gulf of Mexico, and our current and past leaders have failed, or refused, to recognize this imminent threat to the survival of this portion of our state. Louisiana can ill-afford to cede additional thousands of acres of coastal wetlands, with the resulting damage and destruction that would come with it.

David Gereighty will work to unite Louisiana bringing state leadership with financial backing from federal and private sources to solve this problem.

Ethics Reform

  • David recognizes the importance of transparency in income reporting for public servants in state government, and will make ethics reform a top priority.
  • David Gereighty supports HB-730 and the mission of the LA Ethics 1 Coalition. HB-730 requires that every elected and appointed official in the state fill out financial disclosure statements. This important bill failed in the 2007 session. He will work for its passage in the 2008 session.

As your state senator David Gereighty will serve as a responsible and responsive manager of public funds for the public good.
